VAT-REGISTERED BUSINESSES

Registering your business for VAT

If you or your business sells goods or services to businesses and/or consumers, either domestically or abroad, you may need to register for VAT with HMRC.

You must register your business for VAT if your business/ company's turnover is over £85'000  - unless the goods or services you provide are exempt from VAT.

You can register your business voluntarily for VAT to make the most of any available tax reliefs - depending on the nature of your business.

From your effective date of VAT registration you must:

  • charge the right amount of VAT
  • pay any VAT due to HMRC
  • submit VAT Returns
  • keep VAT records and a VAT account

Most VAT registered businesses that earn over £85,000 must also follow the rules for ‘Making Tax Digital for VAT'

Call our Business Services Team on 01223 810 100 for advice on registering businesses for VAT in the UK.
